EXPANDING YOUR MODEL RAILROAD PART 2

In this program we’ll color our finished scenery using a variety of earth colors. Then we’ll ziptexture the scenery using a variety of powdered colors. Grass and weeds will be added to our mountain. Following the grasses, we’ll add bushes and trees. Ballast is needed for our track, and we’ll show you how to blend it in to the scenery.

Another bridge will be installed over our river, and a retaining wall will be built and installed under the bridge. Next more plaster gauze scenery will help form our river, and bridge bents will be scratched built. The other side of the backdrop will be covered with a photo mural, and the original backdrop will be blended into the layout using trees and shrubs.

A town will be laid out near the logging operations, and more blending of bushes and grasses will help push our backdrop to the distance. Then we’ll tackle the saw mill pond which will be painted and blended in to our scenery. We’ll hire an artist friend to blend our mountain into the photo mural backdrop.

A wood retaining wall will be added to our mill pond, and the other photo mural will be blended in to our scenery. Next a sluice gate will be added to the river and more mountains and rocks as well as live scenery will help blend our backdrop into the layout, and finally additional scenery will be added along the first backdrop.

EXPANDING YOUR MODEL RAILROAD PART 3

In volume three of “Expanding Your Model Railroad” owner Jim Hoffman sells his Woodland Scenics layout to a local modeler, and we now have a void to fill...and we’ll fill that with a mining and logging operation.

We”ll move the existing layout to accommodate the new addition, and we’ll add some overhead track lighting to improve the overall lighting on the layout. Next, we”ll weather some structures with dry powder and add them to the existing layout, and we”ll scratchbuild a small engine house for the current layout, and weather it as well.

We”ll install that building as well as add scenery around it. Then we”ll construct the benchwork for the new New addition. We’ll also continue adding scenery and details to our existing layout...such as the stock pens. we”ll add some larger leaf type trees and Aspen trees to our background scene.

Spline sub-roadbed, homasote roadbed, and finally cork roadbed will be added before we lay track, and track and turnouts come next... including a diamond crossing.

Then we”ll jump back to that mill pond and work on the scenery once again, and we”ll begin the massive amounts of scenery that will enhance our new mountainous area...adding rock castings and coloring using spray guns and hand brushes...followed by zip techuring and various foams from both Woodland Scenics and Scenic Express.

Quite a lot of trees will be added to this new mountainous area...including a bunch of scratch built tall pine trees. Then a lift out section that will be constructed to allow access to the scenes and track in the back of the layout. We”ll install a mining complex to provide some switching operations for our mining branch, and we”ll finally pour our river from the sluice gate and more “water” downstream!
