Join Neff Video as we visit a busy diamond and connector in South-Central Illinois near the town of Kinmundy. This junction is located approximately 10 miles north of Salem, Illinois.
The diamond has the appearance of a scissors instead of the usual 90 degree diamond. The Chicago to Pine Bluff Union Pacific (former Mo-Pac) north-south line intersects with the Canadian National (former Illinois Central) north-south line from Chicago to New Orleans. Recently, a 1.3 million dollar connector was put in place so that trains from both the UP and CN could gain access to each other’s tracks.
The diamond and connector have the following appearance: Two twelve-hour days were spent here in April of 2003. Close to 20 trains per 12 hour day were captured on video.
Departing from our normal format of showing the locomotive consists and a few cars, we show more cars in this program than usual, though we don’t show the “entire” train. UP, CN, IC, CSX, NS, Amtrak, GT, KCS, WC, SP, and leased power are shown in this video.
All trains are identified by direction and rail line. In most cases, symbols of each train are listed graphically also.
Approximately one hour long, full color, no narration, stereo sound, and onscreen graphics describe the action
