See some of the largest articulated steam locomotives in 1950 s’ steam action If you want to see big steam power then this program is for you. 8mm color films from the collection of Warren W. Scholl highlight N&W steam freight operations primarily on the Cincinnati-Portsmouth line from 1954 to the end of steam in 1956. Living along this route at Batavia Ohio, Mr. Scholl has a wealth of fine images showing the daily routine. There are lots of scenes of the famous Y Class 2-8-8-2’s in operation including a scene with a pair of Y3’s (one pushing) on a transfer freight. The other large engines on the Norfolk and Western were the speedy Class A 2-6-6-4’s of the 1200 number series. In addition to these monsters, you will see K1 Class 4-8-2’s on the local freight, and 0-8-0 switch engines in operation, plus some surprises.
There are scenes at Clare yard (Cincinnati), and interesting locations like Batavia Hill, Batavia Depot, Afton, and other spots. You will even see a car being polled from a siding with a 4-8-2 on the local.
After steam was gone on the Cincinnati line, Mr. Scholl visited the Portsmouth area, including a visit in 1958 and 1959. When steam was gone there, he traveled further east into the coalfields, as we visit Leager West Virginia, where we see a mine run depart the yard, and pass the drive-in made famous by photographer O. Winston Link.
The last place for steam on the Norfolk and Western was Williamson, and it was visited a few weeks before steam ended, as we see switching and roundhouse scenes. Since no sound ever existed we have added a nice music background, and there is a wealth of informative narration to follow the steam action. In addition we have included a segment with still images that Mr. Scholl took including some of the last runs from Cincinnati. If you like big steam, or Norfolk and Western then you will enjoy this flashback to another era.
