The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad began operations on September 1, 1986, and we were there to capture the action in April of 1988. This is a unique Railroad with its all ALCO fleet of diesel locomotives. The ex-Frisco line extends from Monet Missouri, south to Fort Smith Arkansas. Headquarters is at Springdale Arkansas where we see a variety of Alco power. The scenic Ozark Mountain region forms a lovely backdrop for these rare locomotives on this regional railroad.
Our program looks at all aspects of the duties including switching jobs, and long-haul Springdale to Fort Smith turns. Switching jobs include a C-420 on the Bentonville Local, and the Rogers local powered by a former N&W T-6. After seeing these local jobs, we watch the C-420’s at work on the Fort Smith run which includes the only tunnel on the line, plus the impressive lift bridge over the Arkansas River near Fort Smith.
We follow the train back to Springdale, and a few days later chase another train to Fort Smith which has an RS-32. A special run was made by RS-1 number 22 for publicity photos and an over-under shoot was made with the RS-1 going under a freight, powered by a trio of C-420’s.
Originally shot in 1988, this program was re-edited and released on dvd for the first time in 2013, and was extended with additional footage. Enjoy rare diesels in the Ozark’s of Arkansas in Arkansas Alcos. Live train sounds and informative narration.
