Union Pacific 4-8-4 number 844 was the last of the series built, and has never been retired from the railroad. This program takes you back to the early years as we see some of the first trips in 1960, and continue through the 1970’s.
Learn the history of the engine, and even see some rare scenes of the 844 in regular passenger train service as well as freight service where most of the 4-8-4’s finished. Along the way we enjoy the first excursion in 1960 from Cheyenne to Rawlins, and countless other excursions with trips from Ogden, Utah, Omaha, Nebraska, Denver, Colorado, and many scenes on Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie.
We take you to the Union Pacific Steam Mecca of Cheyenne, and see the engine at the roundhouse, and on the turntable several times, and enjoy several special events like posing with 3985 and Big Boy 4023. We will also see 844 on the point of Union Pacific Passenger trains as it is making one-way ferry trips to Denver, and we will see it on Amtrak, including the last time it ran with Amtrak.
There is a wealth of footage shot on 16mm films by Perry Becker and Everett Rohrer. With a special bonus segment shot in 1981 by Greg Scholl-(with Sound) this video has footage that spans the 1950’s to the 1980’s, with coverage of perhaps the most famous steam locomotive in America.
