In 2004, Terry Lewis & friends made a trip to Folkston Georgia, to check out the Folkston Funnel. The Folkston Funnel is a double track that serves as the main artery for railroad traffic into and out of Florida. From the viewing platform in Folkston, visitors can see trains passing on their way to and from Jacksonville Florida, in the south, and a split north of town where trains go west to Waycross Georgia, and north to Savannah.
In 2004, approximately 40 trains a day on each track passed through the funnel. Locomotives of different railroads, leased units and different CSX paint schemes can be found. Almost every day, one of the two tracks was used as a hold-out at the Martin Street crossing, holding the trains there waiting to get into Rice Yard at Waycross, GA., thus making the double-track railroad a single-track railroad, most of the day!
So join us for a trip back to 2004 to check out all the Rail action at the Folkston Funnel as captured by Terry Lewis!
