We capture CN, CP, and VIA action in the Thousand Islands region of Eastern Ontario on a pleasant Labour Day weekend in 1999.
First we see high speed CN and VIA action on the Montreal to Toronto mainline between Prescott and Morrisburg including one of the last LRC powered trains on a fast VIA schedule.
Next we see CP freight action around the crew change point of Smiths Falls. This is followed by VIA and CN night time action at the Brockville VIA Rail station. VIA F40PH units are seen speeding many trains at 90mph plus speeds on this superbly maintained CN main, some with stainless steel consists. We close with high speed CN and VIA action at Mallorytown and Gananoque.
Some featured power on the program is a rebuilt CP GP9u, an Ontario Northland SD40-2, and a couple of CN trains with Alstom rebuilt SD40-2’s for BNSF.
This was a time when SD40-2’s ruled on CP trains and were still common on CN trains. These scenes are from a bygone era prior to the GEVO and SD70ACE evolution…
