MOTOR CARS and their OWNERS have made up one of the fastest growing segments of the Railroad Hobby Industry. Over the past several years most major railroads have found Hi-Rail vehicles to be a better choice than motor cars for track inspections and repairs. So the Onans, the Fairmounts, the Speeders, and virtually all such motor cars became surplus & expendable and had to go. At first some were given away, but it didn't take long to establish a bid market and thus the hobby of motor car touring.
Vidalia to Savannah (Old Seaboard Airline)
A run on February 26, l994. Our trip traveled through Eastern Georgia Over old Seaboard Airline tracks which are now operated by the Georgia Central. The weather was sunny and chilly, perfect for a day's outing. 22 motor cars were treated to ribbon rail, a rarity in a hobby that usually clicks it off 39 feet at a time.
See industries, track-work, scrub pines, engine facilities, swamps, city centers, and other railroad activity up close and at the operator's leisure. Take a ride in a personal railroad sports car and see what the Motor Car Hobby is all about. Produced by Bob Loehne, Associate Producer - Ed Taylor
